St John's Red Storm

Team Of The Week: St. John's Red Storm

St. John's men tennis team stormed on the Georgetown's men tennis parade as they defeated the Hoyas this past Friday at our nation's capital in Washington D.C. They came away with a 5-2 victory over BIG EAST rival Georgetown which completed the Red Storm's unbeaten record in BIG EAST conference play. The loss will leave the Hoyas' feeling extra glum because it means their perfect home record and five-match winning streak were finally broken. St. John's improves to 16-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while Georgetown falls to 13-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Red Storm fought valiantly to take the opening point in the match by grabbing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. St. John's pair Illija Vucic and Stefan Boijic defeated Georgetown'ss Andrew Dottino and Alex Tropiano by an 8-4 margin to give the Red Storm the early advantage. This win sparked double's team Milo Hauk and Vasko Mladenov to win their back and fourth match at No. 1 doubles 9-8(7-4) to secure the 1-0 for St. John's. Georgetown came charging back as the first singles match to finish for the day was between Hoyas' Charlie Caris and Red Storm's Milo Hauk. Caris won 6-2, 6-4. St John's third singles player, Vucic, would not let Georgetown enjoy their satisfaction for too long as he battled his opponent 7-5 but made easy work of him in the second set, 6-1, to take the win. The Red Storm rookie got his fifth win for the season and gave St John's a 3-1 lead in a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 4 singles. Georgetown's Andrew Bruhn kept the Hoyas in the game with a gritty 6-4,3-6, 6-3 victory over Mladenov, but Mike Lampa would make his effort go to waste as he sealed St. Johns win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 slot. After losing to 36th-ranked VCU Rams this past Saturday, the St. John's Red Storm will compete in the annual BIG EAST Conference Championship in Tampa, Fla, from Thursday, April 19 through Sunday, April 22. Seeding for the championship will take place on Monday, April 16. The Red Storm will definitely be fired up that whole week as they have a great chance at winning the championship this year.
